How To Feel Less Overwhelmed

Feeling overwhelmed is a common experience we all go through at times, but there are strategies we can use to cope.

Let’s discuss a list of ideas and common sense practices that can hopefully help us when feeling overwhelmed.

How To Feel Less Overwhelmed

Identify the source: Try to pinpoint what is causing you to feel overwhelmed. Is it a particular task, a deadline, personal responsibilities, or something else?

Break it down: Once you know the source of your overwhelm, break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. This can make it feel less daunting and help you to focus on one thing at a time.

Prioritize: Determine what tasks are most urgent or important and focus on those first. This can help you to make progress and alleviate some of the pressure.

Take breaks: It’s important to give yourself time to rest and recharge. Take short breaks throughout the day to clear your mind and come back to your tasks with renewed energy.

Practice self-care: Engage in activities that help you to relax and reduce stress, such as exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

Reach out for support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Whether it’s delegating tasks to others or simply talking to a friend or family member about how you’re feeling, having support can make a big difference.

Set boundaries: Learn to say no to additional responsibilities if you’re already feeling overwhelmed. It’s okay to prioritize your own well-being and decline additional commitments.

Focus on what you can control: Sometimes, overwhelming feelings arise from worrying about things that are beyond your control. Try to focus on what you can influence and let go of what you can’t.

Seek professional help: If feelings of overwhelm persist and start to impact your daily life, consider seeking support from a therapist or counselor who can provide you with coping strategies and support tailored to your needs.

Final Thoughts

Remember the fact that feeling overwhelmed is a common experience, and it’s ok to seek help and support when you need it.

For me, a big help is recognizing the distinction between what I can and can’t control.

I recently watched a video discussing how taking on more challenges within our control can help us feel less overwhelmed, as it counteracts the opposite feelings of a loss of control. I thought that was an interesting and potentially helpful strategy.

Be kind to yourself and take things one step at a time.  Thanks for reading.
