These days it can seem like we’re constantly being influenced by the opinions, expectations, and desires of others.
Living for ourselves can feel like a selfish concept. Whether it’s pressure from family, societal standards, or the opinions of peers, it’s easy to lose sight of who we truly are and what we genuinely want.
Living for ourselves, or living authentically, is one of the most empowering choices we can make.
Let’s discuss further.
Live for Yourself and Not Others
Understand Who You Are
Before you can live for yourself, you need to understand who you truly are.
Many people find it challenging to differentiate between their own desires and those of others because they’ve spent so long adopting other people’s views or living according to external standards.
We can start by reflecting on our values, passions, and beliefs. What brings us joy? What makes us feel proud?
Take the time to ponder what you truly want from life, and not just what others want for you. Write out your thoughts, meditate, or try talking with someone you trust to dive deeper into your inner world.
Try spending time alone. Solitude often helps to clear away the noise of others and reveals what your heart truly desires.

Let Go of the Fear of Judgement
A huge barrier to living for yourself is the fear of judgement. We often worry so much about what others think. But why?
Will they approve? Will they be disappointed? This fear only holds us back from fully embracing who we are.
It’s important to recognize that no matter what we do, there will always be people who will have opinions, both positive and negative. And that’s fine, people will form opinions based on their own experiences and biases, but that doesn’t mean their views are the truth of who we are.
Be kind to yourself, especially when you’re tempted to seek approval from others. Surround yourself with people who uplift you and that support you.
Accept that some relationships may change as you start living authentically.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
In the age of social media, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of comparison. Everyone else seems to be living a perfect life, achieving their dreams, and succeeding in ways that we might not be.
But what we see online isn’t always the full picture. People often showcase only the highlights, not the struggles or challenges they face.
Comparing yourself to others will only distract you from your own path and accomplishments. Instead, focus on your personal journey and celebrate your individual successes.
Limit your exposure to social media if it triggers negative comparisons. Focus on your own goals and take pride in the progress you’re making.
Practice gratitude for what you have and where you are in life.

Final Thoughts
Living for ourselves doesn’t mean being selfish or disregarding others. It means simply embracing who we are, honouring our own needs, and aligning our life with our true desires.
It requires courage to face the expectations of others and choose our own path instead.
Be patient with yourself, allow room for mistakes, and keep striving to live a life that reflects your truest self.

You’ve hit on something real here. It’s too easy to lose ourselves in what others think. People will always have opinions, and most of them don’t matter. The key is to figure out who you really are, not what others want from you. Let go of fear. Stop comparing. Focus on your own path and what makes you proud. It’s about finding your truth and sticking to it, even when it’s hard. Your words remind us that living for ourselves is a battle worth fighting. Keep writing. It matters.
