New Year’s resolutions can sometimes be overwhelming, especially when we set high expectations or choose goals that are too difficult to maintain.
But what if instead of aiming for big, drastic changes, we focused on simpler, more manageable goals?
Not only are these easier to stick to, but they can also help us build momentum that can lead to long-term success.
Let’s explore some of the simplest New Year’s resolutions you can make and how they can create a positive ripple effect in your life.
Simple New Year’s Resolutions
Start Your Day with Gratitude
Starting each day by focusing on what we’re grateful for can have a profound impact on our mindset.
Whether it’s taking a moment to reflect on the positive aspects of our lives or writing down three things we’re thankful for, practicing gratitude can help shift our focus away from stress or negativity. This small, simple act can set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
Personally, I’m planning some positive self-talk to go along with this as a daily 5-minute morning routine upon awakening.
Drink More Water
Staying hydrated is a straightforward goal that has wide-ranging benefits for your health and well-being.
Setting a resolution to drink more water each day might seem small, but it’s an easy habit to integrate into your routine. Not only does water keep you feeling more energized, but it also supports digestion, skin health, and mental clarity.

Move Your Body for Just 10 Minutes a Day
Exercise doesn’t have to mean hour-long gym sessions.
A simple resolution to move your body for just 10 minutes a day can help improve your physical and mental health. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a short yoga routine, or some light stretching, incorporating even a small amount of movement into your day can have immediate benefits.
De-clutter a Small Space Each Week
A clutter-free environment can have a significant impact on our mental clarity and productivity.
Rather than trying to organize our entire home in one go, start with de-cluttering one small area, like a drawer or a countertop, each week. This resolution is not only manageable but also creates a sense of accomplishment.
Practice Mindful Breathing for 5 Minutes a Day
Taking five minutes each day to practice mindful breathing can reduce stress, increase focus, and improve overall well-being.
This simple practice involves paying attention to your breath, inhaling and exhaling slowly, and bringing your awareness to the present moment. It’s a quick and easy way to introduce mindfulness into your daily routine.
Set Aside Time for a Hobby or Creative Pursuit
It’s easy to neglect the activities that bring us joy. Committing to spend a few minutes each day or week on a hobby can boost your mood and creativity.
Engaging in a creative pursuit can provide a sense of accomplishment and well-being. This can spark a desire to dedicate more time to your passions and hobbies, which can have a positive impact on your overall happiness.
When we feel fulfilled, we’re more likely to tackle other goals with enthusiasm.
Take Time to Connect with Loved Ones
Making time to connect with friends, family, or loved ones is one of the simplest and most fulfilling resolutions you can make. Regular connections with people you care about are important for emotional health.
Positive social connections can improve mental health, reduce stress, and give us a sense of belonging. The more we nurture relationships, the more positive energy we’ll experience, creating a cycle of connection and happiness.
Sleep for 7-8 Hours Every Night
Many of us sacrifice sleep for productivity, but prioritizing adequate rest can make a world of difference. Committing to a consistent sleep schedule with 7-8 hours of sleep each night can improve our overall health, energy, and mood.
When you make sleep a priority, you’ll wake up feeling more rested and refreshed, which can lead to increased productivity and a more positive outlook on the day ahead. A good night’s sleep also supports better decision-making and emotional regulation.

Final Thoughts
I think the key to sticking with New Year’s resolutions is to keep them simple and achievable.
When we make small, manageable changes, we begin to experience immediate benefits, whether it’s better physical health, a more positive mindset, or stronger relationships.
These small successes create a sense of accomplishment, which fuels our motivation to continue making progress. Over time, these little changes build upon one another, creating a positive momentum that can carry us toward larger, more ambitious goals.
Personally I planned a couple of simple ones for myself, which involved continuing a new hobby this winter and hoping to re-start an old hobby in the spring.
I recently purchased a snowskate (pictured above, no that is not me lol) which is a combination of a snowboard and skateboard. I’ve been out twice already and it was a lot of fun.
This spring I plan to get back into skateboarding which I did as a much younger person so wish me luck on that one, I might need it! Yes it’s just tinkering around with simple hobbies, but I think expanding out of my comfort zone is the bigger picture I envision for myself this year.

I think making simple and doable resolutions is great advice. I’ve made many big challenging new years resolutions in the past that I have not followed through with. Gyms are indeed busier in January (I googled it to double check). I think these are all good suggestions.
