Often misunderstood, esotericism isn’t about secret societies or conspiracy theories.
At its core, it’s a search for inner meaning, a journey inward, and a language of symbols that speaks to the soul.
Let’s discuss some basics of esoteric knowledge.
Esotericism: The Hidden Layers of Reality
What Is Esotericism?
The word esoteric comes from the Greek language, and it means “inner” or “within.”
Esotericism refers to spiritual traditions, philosophies, and systems of knowledge that are not meant for the masses, not because they’re elitist, but because they require a certain readiness of mind and spirit. They’re more about direct experience rather than religious doctrine.
In practical terms, esoteric traditions often deal with:
- Symbolism (the Tree of Life, mandalas, alchemical symbols)
- Mystical cosmologies (like Kabbalah or Hermeticism)
- Initiatory paths (where knowledge unfolds gradually)
- Inner alchemy (spiritual transformation using metaphors of physical alchemy)

Four Esoteric Basics to Know
The Veil of Reality
In many esoteric teachings, the world we perceive is only a shadow of deeper realities. This idea echoes in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, Gnostic thought, and even Eastern philosophies like Advaita Vedanta. The veil (sometimes called Maya, or illusion) must be pierced through intuition, meditation, and initiation.
To “lift the veil” is to start seeing with the “eye behind the eye”. That’s the part of us that senses patterns, meaning, and the divine beneath the ordinary.
Spiritual Alchemy
This is the process of inner transformation and self-discovery, often drawing parallels with the alchemical processes of the physical world. It’s about freeing ourselves from limitations, fears, and negative self-beliefs to achieve higher states of consciousness and spiritual growth.
This involves purifying the “self” and transforming it into a higher, more enlightened state.
As Above, So Below
This Hermetic principle suggests that the microcosm (you, the human) reflects the macrocosm (the universe). It’s the basis for astrology, sacred geometry, and many magical systems. When we look within, we’re not just exploring our psyche; we’re accessing a map of the cosmos.
The principle can be used to understand oneself, one’s relationship with others, and one’s role in the larger universe. For example, understanding the laws of cause and effect in the world can help us understand the same laws as they apply to our own lives.
The phrase can be interpreted in various ways, including the idea that the universe is composed of multiple realms, or that events in one realm can reflect or impact another.
The Language of Symbols
Esoteric systems often communicate through symbols. A simple image, like a snake biting its tail (Ouroboros), can signify eternity, self-renewal, or the cyclical nature of time.
Learning this symbolic language is like tuning into a forgotten dialect of the mind. Dreams, synchronicities, and myths often speak in this tongue.

Why Explore the Esoteric?
You don’t have to become a mystic to appreciate esotericism. We can think of it as a type of spiritual depth psychology.
It encourages introspection, symbolic thinking, and a deeper respect for mystery.
In a time when society and the world itself often feels fragmented, esoteric wisdom offers us integration, and a reminder that the universe isn’t just mechanical but meaningful.

Final Thoughts
The esoteric invites us to slow down, look inward, and reconnect with parts of ourselves we might’ve forgotten in the rush of everyday life.
Just bringing curiosity, openness, and a willingness to wonder is enough.
I’ve gone down a few rabbit holes myself lately, and just find it fascinating that so much knowledge has been passed down throughout the ages to our present day.
We have a habit of thinking that we’re the most advanced humans to have ever lived because our technology is superior to those who came before.
But with so many of our modern problems now becoming apparent, I don’t think I’m alone in my questioning of that narrative.
