Let It Go

Regret has a way of keeping us stuck, doesn’t it?

We replay old decisions, imagine different outcomes, or wonder what might have happened if we’d only made a better choice.

Disappointment can feel much the same. Something didn’t go the way we hoped, and our mind keeps returning to it, looking for an explanation or a way to rewrite the ending.

But eventually, we have to stop looking backward for a future that can only be found by moving forward.

Let It Go

Accept What Happened

The first step isn’t pretending that you don’t care, or trying to forget the experience. It’s accepting that it happened.

Maybe you made a mistake. Maybe someone let you down. Maybe you missed an opportunity or made a decision that you now wish you could take back.

You don’t have to like what happened to accept it. Acceptance simply means you’re no longer spending all your energy arguing with reality.

What happened is part of your story. It doesn’t have to determine what happens next.

What Can We Learn From It?

Regret becomes especially painful when we treat it as nothing more than evidence of failure.

Instead, ask yourself: What can this experience teach me?

Maybe you learned something about your boundaries, your priorities, the people you trust, or the kind of life you actually want.

There is value in looking back when you’re looking for wisdom. There is very little value in looking back simply to punish yourself.

Take the lesson. Leave the punishment behind.

Stop Rewriting the Past

One of the traps of regret is believing there was a perfect decision waiting for you somewhere in the past.

There probably wasn’t.

You made the best decision you could with the information, experience, emotions, and circumstances you had at the time. Today, you know more. You’ve changed. That’s why the decision looks different now.

Give your past self some grace for not knowing what you know today.

Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t change what happened yesterday, but you can influence what you do today.

If you disappointed yourself, make a different choice today. If someone hurt you, decide what boundaries you need going forward. If you missed an opportunity, look for the next one.

Moving on isn’t about forgetting. It’s about putting your attention where it can actually make a difference.

Give Yourself Permission to Move Forward

Sometimes we hold onto regret because letting go feels like we’re saying what happened didn’t matter.

It mattered.

The disappointment mattered. The mistake mattered. The relationship mattered. The opportunity mattered.

But something can matter without having to occupy our minds forever.

We’re allowed to appreciate what was, grieve what wasn’t, and still move forward.

Why We Wallow in the Past

Unfinished business: Your brain replays old events because it tries to make sense of pain or trauma that was never fully processed.

False sense of control: The mind thinks that reviewing an old situation will somehow change the outcome or protect you from future hurt.

Quiet moments: When life is quiet, your brain has extra space to dig up old memories, making the mental loops feel louder.

How to Stop Wallowing and Move Forward

Catch the loop: Notice when you’re replaying an old story. Name it as rumination instead of trying to solve it.

Set a worry window: Give yourself a strict 15 minutes a day to feel your regret or anger. Outside that time, use deep breaths or physical movement to stop the thoughts.

Write it down: Write out the specific regret. Find the core value or lesson hidden beneath the pain, and then choose one small action you can take today.

Focus on the present: Gently bring your attention back to what is happening right now in your physical surroundings.

Final Thoughts

Regret is a natural part of being human. We all have things we wish we’d done differently and moments we’d love to revisit.

But our past is meant to inform our future. In that way, I can honestly say I’m glad that a few past mistakes happened.

We can’t go back and change the beginning of the story. But we can certainly decide what the next chapter looks like.

Take the lesson, forgive yourself where you can, and start putting your energy into the life that’s still in front of you.

I’m writing this for myself just as much as anyone reading this, and I do feel that I’m getting better with this after years of struggling with hopelessly ruminating about the past.

There is nothing we can do about yesterday.

But today is still ours.
