We all have days when we feel down, tired, stressed, or just not quite like ourselves. Often enough, we might not even know exactly why we feel this way.
While we can’t always snap our fingers and make difficult feelings or situations disappear, there are a few small things we can do to take care of ourselves and make the day a little easier.
Let’s discuss a few simple ideas to try when you’re having a hard day.
Small Ways to Feel Better
Take a Break
When everything feels overwhelming, taking a short break can help. Step away from whatever is stressing you out, even if it is only for a few minutes.
You could:
- Sit somewhere quiet and take a few deep breaths.
- Listen to a favourite song.
- Make yourself a warm drink.
- Spend a few minutes outside, or go for a walk.
You don’t have to solve everything at once. Sometimes, simply giving yourself a moment to pause can help.
Get Moving
You don’t need to have a full workout to feel the benefits of movement. A short walk, some gentle stretching, or even moving or dancing to a song you like can help you change your surroundings and get your body moving.
If you can, try stepping outside for some fresh air. A little movement can be a simple way to break up a difficult day.

Talk to Someone
Keeping everything to yourself can sometimes make a bad day feel even heavier. Talking to someone you trust can help you feel less alone.
You don’t necessarily need advice or solutions. Sometimes, having someone listen is enough. You could talk to a friend, family member, teacher, co-worker, or another person you feel comfortable with.
Do Something You Enjoy
When we’re feeling down, we might not feel like doing anything. Still, doing one small thing we enjoy can give us something positive to focus on.
Try:
- Watching a favourite show or movie
- Reading a book
- Drawing or writing
- Playing with a pet
- Cooking or baking
- Listening to music
- Spending time with someone you care about
It doesn’t have to be productive. It’s ok to do something simply because it makes you happy.
And sometimes, quite honestly it makes me perfectly happy to do nothing!
Be Kind to Yourself
Most importantly, please remember that it’s ok to have bad days. We don’t have to be positive all the time, and we don’t have to feel better immediately.
Try speaking to yourself the way you’d speak to a friend who was having a difficult day. Give yourself patience, rest, and understanding.
I find that this perspective changes the way I think, and allows me to give myself grace.

Final Thoughts
Feeling down is a part of life, and there’s no single solution that works for everyone.
Small steps like the ones we discussed can help. I think it’s important to try, and adjusting our mindset even slightly can sometimes help so much.
Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out. Sometimes, taking care of ourselves one small step at a time is enough.
Things come in waves sometimes, bad times usually pass, and you’ll find yourself having a good day again before you know it.
