What is The Meaning of The Vinegar Tasters?

The Vinegar Tasters was an ancient Chinese painting, and later spread to other East Asian countries in various versions.

The composition depicts the three founders of China’s major religious and philosophical traditions: Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. The three men are Confucious, Buddha, and Lao-Tzu, respectively

The three men are dipping their fingers in a vat of vinegar and tasting it.

One man reacts with a sour expression, one reacts with a bitter expression, and one reacts with a sweet expression.

Each of their expressions represents the predominant attitude of his philosophy.

Confucianism saw life as sour, in need of rules to correct the degeneration of people, while Buddhism saw life as bitter, dominated by pain and suffering due to attachment with possessions and material desires.

However Taoism saw life as sweet due to it being fundamentally perfect in its natural state. From the Taoist point of view, sourness and bitterness come from the interfering and unappreciative mind.

Life itself, when understood and used for what it is, is sweet. That is the message of The Vinegar Tasters. (Source: www.en.wikipedia.org)

There is another interpretation of the painting stating that since the three men are gathered around one vat of vinegar, the three teachings are all one.

Taoism holds that there are certain meanings to life. So no, Taoism isn’t nihilistic.

What Does Taoism Say About Gender?

The Tao itself was said to be feminine or Yin, the mother of all beings.

Taoism is perhaps unique in that the feminine is integral to it, represented in its mythology, history and core principles like the Mysterious Feminine. It represents ultimate emptiness, from which time and space and all creation came.

Final Thoughts:

We often try to fix things or argue points when sometimes the best action is to do nothing and sit still or just listen to the other person.
